UNC Asheville hosts a student collegiate chapter of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). Many of the chapter’s members are involved in the group’s main project: designing and building an electric race car for the international Formula SAE Electric competition, held annually in Lincoln, Nebraska.
SAE makes use of UNC Asheville’s new STEAM Studio at the RAMP (River Arts Makers Place). This 11,000 square foot innovation center is located adjacent to the campus at 91 Riverside Drive.
“The race car pretty much wouldn’t be able to be built if we didn’t have the STEAM Studio. It’s been a significant benefit to have that space and the machinery in there. We’re a first-year team in an international competition, and we don’t have a whole lot of money. We can’t necessarily order the parts, but we’re able to manufacture almost 80 percent of the car in-house.”
