FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you give tours of STEAM Studio?

Yes, we sure do. Tours are available BY APPOINTMENT. Please request a tour by emailing steamstudio@unca.edu to discuss date, time, size and needs of your group. Tours are free, but tours + demonstration / activity require a fee.

I am not a UNCA Student, can I come to STEAM?

STEAM Studio’s primary function is to serve UNCA Students. Volunteer / support roles for non-UNCA students that include limited access are periodically available. Middle & High School students interested in working in the studio can enroll in either Community Tool School or the Crafting Passages programs. UNCA alums are invited to apply for the Post Bac Fellowship.

Can you make stuff for me?

STEAM Studio is not designed to mass produce. We are available to prototype, to do custom work and small batch production for the community at industry-standard rates.

I am a UNCA student. Can I use the studio?

UNCA students are invited to enroll in the Intro to STEAM class. Successful course completion is the first step to gaining access to the studio. Students enrolled in Art or Mechatronics classes that require studio access to fabricate their work are given studio access during class time and after hours by prior arrangement. We also offer training by appointment or through informal classes.

What are the rules for visiting STEAM Studio?

Great Question. Closed toe & heel shoes, eye protection (we have Safety Glasses you can borrow – prescription glasses wearers will have to wear safety glasses on top of their regular glasses, yes it’s a look), long hair tied back, and please remove dangly jewelry / lanyards.

When was STEAM Studio first opened?

December 2016. We’ve come a long way, in a short amount of time.

Did you really make that huge Jenny Lind sculpture in the Studio?

Yes. Designed and fabricated right here. Mind blowing, we know.
